MY APPROACH TO
NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE

Naturopathic primary care provides thorough medical care, diligent listening and well rounded communication.  We are trained to ask questions, and to consider the whole person with a focus on prevention and wellness.

Naturopathic medicine is rooted in these 6 fundamental principles:

1.

HEALING POWER OF NATURE

How often have you felt rejuvenated from time spent in nature, detaching from technology and listening to your body wisdom?  The human body is truly amazing and capable of healing.  My job to bring innate healing power to fruition.  We do this by nutritional guidance, botanical medicine and reconnecting with natures power.

2.

DOCTOR AS TEACHER

If we can help you understand the way our body works and its complex chemistry we can embrace the changes needed to optimize its function.   The word “doctor” comes from the Latin word “docere” meaning “to teach.” With understanding comes motivation for lifestyle modifications which are essential for true healing.

3.

PREVENTION

In a world that has proven that symptom management (palliative care) has its flaws, we need to focus our attention on prevention.  The most powerful way of preventing disease is through education, awareness and choice.  When we can be active participates in our own health, we choose prevention, we choose health.

4.

TREAT THE CAUSE

This is so intimately linked to prevention, to addressing the root cause of illness instead of ‘sweeping under the rug’ the signs of illness our body tries to communicate.  My objective as a naturopathic physician is to identify the cause, whether it be inflammatory in origin,  past emotional or physical trauma, hormone/neurotransmitter imbalances, digestive issues etc.  Healing is initiated once we address the root.

5.

TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON

You are not just a symptom, you are not just another patient, another number.  You are a friend, sister, brother, mother, father, daughter, son, husband, wife…  You are a unique, beautiful mind, body and soul.  Each component of you, brought together in harmony brings wellness.

6.

FIRST DO NO HARM

I believe most of us crave safety and security; your medicine shouldn’t be something that interferes with that.  Naturopathic doctors are trained to use safe and effective methods such as nutrition, botanical medicine, and homeopathy in conjunction with pharmaceutical medications (when needed or already prescribed). We aim for simple means to bring about big change in complex situations, the less invasive, least toxic medicines are our first choice for you ad your family.

I love working with chronic fatigue, thyroid and hormone optimization, digestive health from food sensitivities to IBS/IBD/SIBO as well as migraines and chronic pain treatments. I also take great pride in helping patients optimize their health and nutrition by helping to facilitate weight loss goals.

I chose to take an investigative approach to health.  I deeply believe that the body can heal itself if we create and provide the right conditions for it. With a thorough intake and lab testing we gather information to decipher appropriate and specific avenues to direct treatment to provide the ideal conditions for your healing.

DR. WALKER IS GREAT!

“She is thorough, caring, and knowledgeable! Grateful to have found her! I have used her both for myself as a middle aged woman and for my toddler and have felt well taken care of and come away with carefully thought out treatment plans for better nutrition, combatting deficiencies, addressing overall tiredness, and learning more about how to improve fertility.”

MY FIRST VISIT

“My first visit with Dr. Walker exceeded my expectations. It was great to finally talk to a knowledgeable doctor who cares enough to look for a cause of my condition instead of just slapping pills on it. I didn’t feel rushed, and I appreciated the time Dr. Walker spent with me. I won’t go back to a Western medicine doctor unless I absolutely have to.”

BEST CHOICE I’VE EVER MADE

“I decided to try naturopathic because it is just a few blocks from my house. I’ve had serious health problems for the past.year and with my MD’s I was not getting any better. With treatment from Dr. Katherine Walker ND I am actually starting to feel healthy. This is my first experience with medical care that I feel like they hear me and want to really help.”

A Note From Dr. Walker

I have found being a physician one of the most humbling human experiences.  Daily I am reminded by the relationships I build with my patients the delicate balance between the art and science of medicine.  What drives me forward is my passion for learning and the changes my patients experience in their health from digging deeper, establishing a strong foundation of health and building toward the way they want to feel.

I believe most chronic disease processes are preventable and many symptoms can be reversed when taking an individualized approach.  You have the power to transform your health and optimize your well-being, often we just need a guide and accountability.

Healing takes time and I believe that small and simple actions make a big difference.  I collaborate with you to help you become a more active participant in your health journey.  Since every person is unique, we create a treatment approach that is personalized for you that realistically fits with your lifestyle. I am a physician and a healer, but I am just a spark for you to heal yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do Naturopathic Doctors treat?

Naturopathic doctors integrate standard medical diagnostics with a broad range of natural therapies and treat the same conditions as a family doctor, including both acute concerns and chronic conditions for people of all ages. Within naturopathic family care, there are a wide variety of conditions Dr. Walker treats, from the common cold/flu and musculoskeletal injuries, to neurological, autoimmune or chronic illnesses, cardiovascular disease and weight loss. Treatments may be adjunctive to standard medical treatment or stand alone depending on what is indicated. Dr. Walker works with MDs and other qualified health care practitioners to provide a collaborative approach to wellness.

If you are taking prescription medications, NDs are trained in pharmacology and to know interactions between prescription medications and natural therapies. Subsequently, Dr. Walker can safely prescribe natural treatments that enhance the effectiveness, reduce the side effects and rebalance any deficiency from your prescription medications.

Naturopathic therapies have a broader range of benefits than many modern medicinal treatments, giving patients additional health gains while using less intrusive, less toxic, and less stressful methods in the process. Our focus is on providing the best possible individualized care to each of our patients while helping to establish a clear path to long term health and well-being.

Is this covered by your insurance?

Dr. Katherine Walker is in network with  Aetna, ASH, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, MODA, Pacific Source, Providence and pending CHP.

Will my insurance cover the cost of supplements?

Insurance policies with prescription drug coverage do not generally cover any supplements. However, if you have a health savings account (HSA), you can submit your receipts to them, and they will generally cover supplements.
